Shift 6. Dual Intensity

Students are practicing fluency and understanding. There is more than a balance between these two things in a classroom - both are occurring with intensity.

An EngageNY video on Mathematical Instructional Shifts 2-6.

The discussion of Shift 6: Dual Intensity takes place from 30:15 to 32:08

When it comes to fluency, one challenge that adult numeracy teachers often ask about is what to do with students who do not know their multiplication tables. These slides are from a 2012 NCTM presentation titled, "Math Fact Fluency: How and Why We Teach for Flexible Thinking" which explores the connection between fluency and flexibility. It describes some interesting strategies for helping students improve their fluency with multiplication through targeted conceptual understanding, anchor facts and encouraging different strategies.
