Preparing Students for the New High School Equivalency Assessment

Professional Development for Adult Education Teachers in the Common Core Era

Who We Are

The Common Core Standards, designed to promote career and college readiness in K-12 students, have been adopted in over 40 states across the U.S., including New York. NYS Department of Education has announced its intention to have all adult education instruction and any high school equivalency assessments aligned to the Common Core State Standards by 2017. To meet these standards, students and teachers will need to develop significantly deeper math, reading and writing skills, and expand their background knowledge in both science and social studies.

To help teachers and students prepare to meet the new standards, the Booth Ferris Foundation of New York City has funded the professional development team at CUNY's Adult Language and Literacy Program to provide professional development support to New York City adult education teachers across the city.
