CUNY CCI Professional Development Seminars
CUNY CCI professional development seminars will consist of four sessions for literacy teachers and four sessions for math teachers.
Reading and Writing Practices for High School Equivalency
Reading and Writing Practices for High School Equivalency will focus on the teacher's role in helping students read and respond to higher level texts.
Teachers will learn to:

- Help students build and activate background knowledge in the areas of science and social studies through reading a variety of texts
|
- Model effective reading strategies such as paraphrasing, annotating, summarizing and self-questioning
|
- Help students learn to identify and evaluate writers' claims and evidence and respond effectively to texts in writing.
|
Mathematics Learning for High School Equivalency
Mathematics Learning for High School Equivalency will focus on implementing the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice in the classroom, with an emphasis on student thinking and cognitively challenging mathematical tasks.
Teachers will learn to:

- Help students make sense of problems and persevere in solving them; construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others and model with mathematics.
|
- Develop on inquiry-based math class, focused on problem-solving, social learning and quantitative reasoning
|
- Develop a set of general effective problem-solving and sense-making strategies
|
