The CUNY Common Core Initiative for Adults

Preparing Students for the New High School Equivalency Credential

Professional Development for adult education teachers in the Common Core Era

Who We Are

The Common Core Standards, designed to promote career and college readiness, have been adopted in over 40 states across the U.S., including New York.   In 2014, the new GED test based on the Common Core Standards will be introduced.  While New York State is currently investigating alternatives to the GED 2014 test, any assessment of high school equivalency in New York will likely be aligned with the Common Core Standards.   To meet these standards, students will need to develop significantly higher math, reading and writing skills, and expand their capacities to comprehend science and social studies texts.

To help teachers and students prepare to meet the new standards, the Booth Ferris Foundation of New York City has funded the professional development team at CUNY's Adult Language and Literacy Program to provide professional development support to New York City adult education teachers across the city.

What We Do

Website

The CUNY CCI website for adult education teachers and students.  The website will include information about Common Core Standards, updates on GED(R) 2014 and other high school equivalency assessments, book blogs, teaching resources and helpful links.

Professional Development Seminars

CUNY CCI will offer a series of free seminars designed to help New York City adult education teachers guide and support students as they acquire the reading, writing and math skills needed to align instruction with the Common Core.

Resource Center

CUNY CCI will establish a resource center of curricula and student reading materials in science and social studies.  Curricula will demonstrate teaching practices focused on comprehending complex text, evaluating a writer’s claims, and developing flexible problem solving skills.
