The CUNY Common Core Initiative for Adults
Preparing Students for the New High School Equivalency Assessment
Professional Development for adult education teachers in the Common Core Era
Who We Are
The Common Core Standards, designed to promote career and college readiness, have been adopted in over 40 states across the U.S., including New York. NYS Department of Education has announced its intention to have all adult education instruction and any high school equivalency assessments aligned to the Common Core State Standards by 2017. To meet these standards, students and teachers will need to begin working now to develop significantly higher math, reading and writing skills, and expand their capacities to comprehend science and social studies texts.
To help teachers and students prepare to meet the new standards, the Booth Ferris Foundation of New York City has funded the professional development team at CUNY's Adult Language and Literacy Program to provide professional development support to New York City adult education teachers across the city.
The CUNY CCI website is for adult education teachers, administrators and students. The website include information about the Common Core Learning Standards, updates on the TASC (the new high school equivalency test for NY), teaching resources, book blogs and helpful links.
- Professional Development Seminars
CUNY CCI offers free seminars designed to help New York City adult education teachers guide and support students as they acquire the reading, writing and math skills needed to align instruction with the Common Core.
